The Social Implications of
Saturn in Libra

Saturn is the furthest planet from Earth which can still be seen with the naked eye. It stands as a gate to the three “transcendental planets – Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – which lie beyond this hydrogen/helium gas Giant.
In Transpersonal Astrology the planets are viewed as symbols of psychological driving forces; and these forces are “colored” or modified in accordance with the “Sign” (sector of sky as viewed from Earth) they happen to be in.

Saturn’s symbolic energy is somewhat derived from his position at the boundary of our visible Solar System. As such, Saturn “rules” such things as: Structure, control, limitation and organization. Through Saturn’s restrictions and delays, which call for discipline, perseverance and character development, Saturn acts as a teacher. He stands as a symbol of a natural psychic process, which we all share; a process in which we can utilize the restrictions and pain in order to develop a structure for the ego in order to create a more conscious fulfilment in life. This brings to mind the words of Carl Jung: “We spend the first half of our lives discovering ego, the second half learning to relinquish it.”

Saturn is the ruling planet of Capricorn, a Sign associated with career, success, honors and achievement. Saturn is the “exalted ruler” of the marriage and relationship Sign, Libra. As such, Saturn’s lessons hold the key to our “heaven-or-hell” in these important areas of success in Life focus and relating. And his primary lessons center around proper use of power – being a proper human being – and cooperation and commitment versus separative consciousness and competition.

In Jungian terms, Saturn represents the “Shadow,” or that part of our psyche which contains the negative, unpleasant qualities in our personality which we would like to hide. Certain contents and functions of our personal unconscious mind that are, at first, insufficiently developed.

Our Saturn-Capricorn and Libra-Venus experiences can be the arena for turning “stumbling blocks” into the “stepping stones” that always exist beneath the surface. This process of “shadow integration” is greatly facilitated as we take 100% responsibility for all of our experiences – for they are all attracted by our choice of thoughts!

Saturn or the “shadow” elements in our personality center around repressed and unlived sides of our total personality. And these “heaven-or-hell” potentials tend to stay buried in the unconscious... until, finally, one way or another, they begin to erupt into our conscious lives! Often, we can tend to project a social facade, or “persona” and play out a role in life. Lester Kreiser, M.D. said: “We get so much in the habit of wearing a disguise before others that we eventually appear disguised before ourselves.” Saturn in Libra can give us an opportunity to “remove our masks.”

The Sign, Libra, and Venus its ruling planet, represents: Contracts, law, relationship, love, beauty, cooperation, balance and harmony. Saturn is said to be “exalted” in the marriage Sign Libra. And the days of the week, named after the Sun, Moon, and visible planets, are associated with such sayings as: “Saturday’s child works hard for a living.” The association here is that marriages call for responsibility and work. There’s another saying: “Love can bloom eternal. But Passion is more like a fire. If left unattended, it will eventually go out.”

Every 29 1/2 years or so, transiting Saturn comes back and spends about 2 1/2 years in alignment with the 30 degree sector of the sky we call “Libra.” This Saturn in Libra cycle reveals, symbolically, what we - individually and collectively - are likely to be psychologically “ripe” to be focusing on, and therefore attracting in our experiences.

Basically, Saturn in Libra centers around important contractual social activities. These can include legal business, political and partnership activities. Marriage matters are brought into focus and this cycle can bring to the surface difficult issues that need to be dealt with. Important agreements, contracts or treaties are more likely to be in the news. Public businesses may find it necessary to be more accountable to the public in terms of misuse of power.

All-in-all this cycle can turn out to be constructive and rewarding for those who have become aware of their unconscious “stuff’ and intended to live more in accordance with the “Golden rule.”

Saturn left the Sign Virgo and entered Libra on October 29, 2009, and he retrogrades back into Virgo on April 7, 2010, until July 21, 2010 when he transits back into Libra until October 5, 2012. Then he enters the next Sign, Scorpio. (To see more about Saturn, and Saturn in Virgo, go to aquariusservices.net and click on “Articles.”)
Whatever we began in our lives as Saturn entered Libra’s opposite Sign, Aries, in the Spring of 1996, about 14 years ago, now comes to “harvest” as Saturn enters Libra for 2 1/2 years.

During this Saturn-in-Libra cycle we might want to consider that, since Libra is a Venus-ruled Sign and Venus attracts, that we tend to attract what we think about most – whether we like it or not!

Yes, there can be difficulties in relationships during this cycle. But, for those who have learned since the Saturn-in-Aries cycle, approximately 14 or 15 years ago, how to not view things so personally, and how to let go of the judge-and-blame approach to life, this can turn out to be a very rewarding time in relating with others.

It might be helpful to consider Jung’s words during this cycle: “What disturbs us about others can teach us a lot about self.”

On this same subject of Relationships, Liz Greene, an Astrologer and Jungian analyst, has stated in her book “SATURN” (which I highly recommend);
“...we do not generally form them for the purpose of being happy, we form them to complete something incomplete, and they are therefore a process of growth rather than an end in themselves.”
Of course, when one has brought the unconscious into consciousness, then one may be more likely to enter, or be in a relationship, by conscious choice, instead of the usual unconscious attracting one’s transsexual “anima” or “animus” side.

“In conscious relating we no longer feel a need to hold others, or their behavior, responsible for how we feel; because we’ve learned that our choice of thoughts have always attracted our experiences!” (As ye sow...”)
This conscious choice, instead of continuing to live by default, is more likely after one has gone through a first “Saturn return”! (Saturn returns to its birth location about every 29 1/2 years.)

Januaries and Octobers can be especially significant in reference to the potentials mentioned for this 2 1/2 year cycle. One significant point within the Saturn in Libra cycle may take place around, or shortly after, the15 degree Libra New Moon conjunct Mercury and Saturn on October 7, 2010 (as Galactic Center does a rare shift into the 28th degree of Sagittarius). This cycle can include such things as people: “Coming to terms with the inevitability of establishing steady rhythms of social activity.” (from a Sabian Symbol for the 15th degree of Libra lunation.)
Following are some brief potentials of how each of the 12 Sun Signs are likely to experience this 2 1/2 year transit of Saturn through Libra. You can factor in these keynote potentials with those already mentioned for all Signs during this cycle; but please keep the Talmud’s words in mind: “Everything is foreseen, but free will is given.”

ARIES: Marriage, business or other serious partnerships, and legal matters are in
focus during your Saturn-in-Libra cycle.
TAURUS: Work, health, business travel, publishing, teaching, business partnership
development, public service, and growth in a new relationship can be emphasized.

investments are some of your more natural areas of in-depth commitment during this cycle.
CANCER: A serious turning point and new foundations associated with those who are close in your life. Home, property, family and relationship matters are potentially featured, as well as your own struggle for individuation.
LEO: Your romantic and playful side can take on a more down-to-earth perspective as you may have some serious decisions to make, about work, health, communicating, growth and repair involving those around you.
VIRGO: The focus for you during this cycle can be on security, finances, and what you feel you need to work with. Children, romance, and the desire for enjoyment in your work and relationships is emphasized..
LIBRA: Home, family or property matters, as well as physical and personal stability, are in focus during this cycle. This is an important time period of new beginnings and foundations in your life.

Secretly, or otherwise, you may be building for your future dreams about relationship.
Relatives and your early environment may be significant.
SAGITTARIUS: If you’re willing to take on new responsibilities with others, this cycle can turn out to be productive for your goals and relationships. Finances and your needs are important factors but, as always, it’s important that you examine your values before acting.
CAPRICORN: Your social responsibilities and career can bring you more into the public eye in this important action turning point in your life. Legal and partnership factors may be involved, and your ambition to succeed will draw support as you are willing to work with others.
AQUARIUS: Important distant connections may lead to travel during this cycle. For some, a relocation involving career and/or relationship changes - partner’s career may be an important factor.
PISCES: This Saturn-in-Libra cycle can parallel your desire to pool resources with those who are close to you - a desire to manage in-depth - financially, sexually... the dream is to accomplish your goals by working together.

May we all find more peace, love and
harmony during this 2-1/2 year movement of Saturn through
Libra as we contemplate our Oneness, put the
“Inner Marriage” first, and open up to our
highest state of grace: Unconditional Love.

In Oneness,
Dennis
